Collymore slams reported Newcastle striker target, claims only two players good enough

Stan Collymore has painted a damning picture of the current situation at Newcastle, after takeover talks fell through.
He also criticises the one signing that manager Rafa Benitez has brought through the door, Kenedy, and says that reported striker target Islam Slimani is not good enough.
In his column in the Mirror, Collymore claims that things were looking good for Newcastle fans three months ago, with takeover talks with Amanda Staveley progressing.
It looked like Benitez would finally get the transfer kitty he needed to strengthen his squad in January.
However, with takeover talks now in disarray and just four days left in the January transfer window, it’s been a catastrophic January for Newcastle.
Collymore doesn’t rate Newcastle’s chances in the Premier League based on just Chelsea attacker Kenedy signing for the club so far.
“Yes, he has already pushed the button on the deal to sign Kenedy on loan from Chelsea and, yes, Islam Slimani is another who could be added to the squad.
“But adding a player Chelsea don’t want for the next five months and another Leicester City don’t want at all is hardly the major surgery the Newcastle squad so desperately needs.
“By my reckoning, and I’m talking ability-wise rather than form here, Toon have only two players who would be genuine performers in the top half of the table week in, week out… and they are Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie.
“So the addition of winger Kenedy and frontman Slimani, hardly Premier League sensations, does not even constitute minor surgery – it’s more of a sticking plaster, really.”
Collymore goes on to say that owner Mike Ashley has the money to bring in quality players if he wanted to.
He also states that with Ashley not willing to invest in players, it could lead to Benitez walking – something he claims would be disastrous for the club.
In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies are in the hunt to sign this £6million-rated forward who has been tipped for stardom by Frank Lampard.
