Confirmed: Tottenham given emphatic answer in pursuit of £15m striker

Tottenham have missed out on Swiss sensation Breel Embolo after he agreed to join Schalke, it was confirmed on Sunday.
The Bundesliga club announced on their official website that they had secured the signing of the 19-year-old striker from Basel ahead of a number of clubs across Europe.
Embolo has signed a five-year contract with Schalke and the fee for the teenager has not been publicly disclosed, although reports in Germany claim the transfer cost will be £15.4million.

Embolo was on Tottenham’s shortlist of striker targets at the beginning of the transfer window as they press ahead with plans to strengthen their attack this summer.
But, as Football Insider revealed earlier this month, Spurs had reservations about signing a player directly from the Swiss league.

He is now headed for the Bundesliga, where he will follow in the path of countrymen Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka.
Embolo has been closely monitored on the back of his performances for club and country since breaking into the Basel team at the age of 16 and dubbed Switzerland’s biggest prospect since Shaqiri.
He scored 13 goals and supplied nine assists in 40 appearances in all competitions for Basel this season and has represented Switzerland at Euro 2016.
The teenager has already been awarded 12 senior caps, scoring one goal, and has struck 31 times in 90 matches for Basel.
Basel sporting director Georg Heitz admitted earlier this month that Embolo is headed to one of two destinations as he assessed their prospects of hanging on to the highly rated 19-year-old striker.
“It’s very probable that he’ll leave this summer,” said Heitz, as quoted by Teamtalk. “There are only two countries he could go to: England or Germany.”
Significantly, Schalke announced the signing of Embolo just 24 hours after Switzerland were eliminated from Euro 2016.
Pochettino is keen to beef up the Spurs attack after Harry Kane led the front line virtually singlehandedly in the recently completed domestic campaign.
In other Tottenham transfer news, another White Hart Lane attacker is set to be sold this summer after a decision by Pochettino.
