Confirmed Tottenham line-up: Midfield duo axed for Manchester United clash

By Harry Sykes

Eric Dier has been axed by Tottenham for their Premier League showdown against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

The England international has been overlooked after Mauricio Pochettino restored the fit-again Toby Alderweireld to the starting XI following a two-month absence.

Alderweireld, who was a 68th minute substitute in the midweek Champions League win over CSKA Moscow, is restored at the back, where Dier had been deputising for the Belgium international.

Dier, 22, would have hoped to get the nod to start in the midfield anchorman role that he made his own last season.

But manager Pochettino has opted to pair Mousa Dembele with Victor Wanyama, the summer signing who has started all of Spurs’ Premier League matches this season.

This means that 20-year-old midfielder Harry Winks, who also started against CSKA, drops down to the substitute’s bench to make way for Dembele, who was rested in midweek.

Pochettino has stuck with nine of the starters in midweek and has put his faith in the front four who have delivered improved showings in recent times.

This means that Moussa Sissoko once again misses out, as Harry Kane is supplemented by attacking midfield trio Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son.
In other Tottenham team news, the club have confirmed they are closing in on a major January signing.
