Everton and West Ham have approached Atletico Madrid about the possibility of signing Nicolas Gaitan in the January transfer window, according to a report.

Spanish news outlet AS claims that the Toffees and the Hammers have contact the La Liga outfit about Gaitan, 29, as he is expected to leave Madrid next month in a cut-price deal.

It is understood that Atletico want £13.3million for the 19-times Argentina international, however it is likely that the winger will leave for lower than that asking fee.

Crystal Palace and Southampton are also said to have contact Atletico about the ex-Boca Juniors and Benfica attacker while Turkish side Fenerbahce are also interested.

The report adds that West Ham tried to sign Gaitan in the summer but he instead opted to go to Watford before a move to the Premier League broke down.

The versatile winger has made just 12 appearances across all competitions this season and has not been able to score or supply as assist.

Football Insider verdict

Gaitan has had a tough spell in his career at Atletico where he has really struggled to get into the first-team. Diego Simeone’s squad is a very talented one so you have to be a very, very good player to earn a spot in it. Unfortunately for Gaitan, Atletico are perhaps too good for him. The lack of game-time should not put off Everton or West Ham, who would welcome a player of his natural technique and pace into their squads. Both could do with a bit of extra depth on the wings and Gaitan provides the versatility to be a very good squad player if anything else. For less than £13.3million, both sides could do a lot worse.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have been installed as huge favourites to sign this midfield colossus in January.
