Chelsea have made contact with Everton ahead of a potential January swoop for Ross Barkley, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that Tottenham still have Barkley, 24, on their radar despite not making a move for him in the summer due to his injury lay-off.
Barkley snubbed a move to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day because he was believed to be in favour of a move to Spurs, but Mauricio Pochettino had overlooked signing the England international due to his spell on his the sidelines which he is expected to return from in at least two weeks’ time.
It is now understood that Chelsea have not given up on signing the attacking midfielder and have made contact with Everton over what it would take to sign him in January with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.
Barkley, who is known for his technical wizardry in midfield, has not made a single appearance for the Toffees this term and it will be interesting to see how new manager Sam Allardyce will approach his situation at Goodison Park.
Football Insider Verdict
Barkley’s situation at Everton is most likely to be one of the biggest stories of the January transfer window. Allardyce may yet be able to convince him to stay on Merseyside now that he has replaced Ronald Koeman in charge but with Spurs and Chelsea prowling, it may be hard to sway his decision. Barkley won’t be able to walk into the first-team of the two London sides. Spurs have Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen in his preferred role while Chelsea also have good depth in the attacking roles. However Antonio Conte’s switch to a five-man midfield in some games could mean that Barkley would in fact get more starts at Stamford Bridge than at Wembley.
In other Tottenham news, it has been confirmed that Spurs may terminate the deals for this highly-rated duo in January.
