Kevin Phillips says that Rangers would be “crazy” to let Alfredo Morelos leave Ibrox this month with Premier League Tottenham looking to a deal.

The former Sunderland and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the 23-year-old is just too important to Steven Gerrard in the club’s hunt for the Premiership title.

As revealed exclusively by Football Insider on Tuesday, the Premier League giants are working on a deal for the Colombian hitman after identifying him as a worthy understudy for star striker Harry Kane.

Rangers attacker Alfredo Morelos fumes

With Steven Gerrard and Dave King both publicly declaring Morelos is not for sale, Phillips said it would be madness from the club if they were to let him depart this month.

Phillips told Football Insider: “That certainly would turn anyone’s head, but from Gerrard’s point of view and from Rangers, they’d be crazy, I don’t see it happening in this window.

“It could possibly happen in the summer but Rangers have got a chance of winning that SPL (Premiership), they haven’t won it for years and years so why would you let your top goalscorer go?

“He’s you’re main threat, it would be crazy, it would be suicidal business, wouldn’t it, from Rangers’ point of view? The lad’s made a reputation for himself, he can score goals so rightly so there’s going to be some big clubs.”

Morelos has been lethal in front of goal for Rangers this season, netting 28 goals across all competitions, 12 of which have come in the Scottish top flight.

He managed to score a total of 30 goals in 48 games for the Light Blues during the 2018/19 campaign, his form earning him a call-up to the Colombian national side.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that Steven Gerrard has intervened to stop defender joining Premier League club amid big development.
