Cristiano Ronaldo cited in 'incredible' verdict after new Liverpool contract update - pundit

Alan Hutton has admitted it is no surprise to hear Liverpool want to tie James Milner down to a new contract.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, compared the 36-year-old to Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of their “incredible” longevity playing at the very top.

As reported by the Telegraph (1 May), Liverpool have offered Milner a new one-year deal to stay at Anfield, with his current terms expiring this summer.

The versatile midfielder has been with the Reds since leaving Manchester City in 2015.

Hutton insisted Jurgen Klopp has proven he relies on Milner and suggested the veteran still has plenty to offer.

Discussing how valuable Milner’s experience is to Liverpool, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You can’t buy that. He’s one of those guys, that kind of Cristiano Ronaldo type, that has looked after himself since day one.

“He’s never veered from that and he’s reaping the rewards at this moment in time. He can continue to play at such a high level. His numbers are incredible.

“As well as that, the character around the place. He’s a guy who has been there, seen it, done it and bought the t-shirt. You would want him there.

“You can rely on him. Whenever he really needs somebody, whether it be at full-back or midfield, he’s your man.

“So it doesn’t surprise me that they want him for at least another year.”

Milner has played 35 times across all competitions for Liverpool this season, with eight league starts to his name.

He has 809 career appearances under his belt, 285 of which have come with the Reds.
