Crystal Palace cannot afford to sell Jean-Philippe Mateta after Jorgen Strand Larsen’s performance vs West Ham United

Crystal Palace were forced to accept a draw on Monday as they drew 0-0 with West Ham United.

It was a slog of a match, with neither team producing many clear-cut chances throughout.

After their progression into the Conference League semi-finals on Thursday, Oliver Glasner opted to rotate many of his players, including the front line.

This saw stars such as Jorgen Strand Larsen come into the starting XI for Jean-Philippe Mateta.

However, his woeful display up top shows exactly why Mateta cannot be sold by Palace in the summer.

Jorgen Strand Larsen continues to offer nothing for Crystal Palace

Against West Ham United, Strand Larsen was simply awful.

The striker offered nothing up top, and struggled to even link up with his teammates.

As a result, Glasner was forced to pull the Norway international onto the pitch on the hour mark and replace him with Mateta.

For many, this type of performance was expected, with Strand Larsen now failing to pick up a goal or an assist in his last eight appearances in all competitions.

While the 26-year-old was brought in to replace Mateta, it is becoming increasingly clear that he is incapable of doing this.

The France international may still be a controversial figure at Selhurst Park, but he can score goals and win the Eagles vital points.

Yet, Strand Larsen has failed to offer this at every opportunity, and only has four Premier League goals to his name this season.

Therefore, as it stands, Palace simply cannot afford to let Mateta depart, as they might not have any threat up top next season.

Who is interested in Mateta?

Football Insider has exclusively revealed that many Premier League clubs are interested in Mateta ahead of the transfer window.

However, with the striker now entering the last year of his contract, Palace may be forced to sell for a price-cut fee.

Proving his fitness may be a stumbling block for the striker if he is to depart. However, if he can remain fit going into the final matches of the season, this should not be a problem.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Mateta will depart Selhurst Park in the summer, with Palace clearly struggling to get their other attackers scoring goals at present.
