Crystal Palace's updated Adam Wharton plan revealed as Liverpool make transfer decision
Crystal Palace are set to demand a bumper price tag for Adam Wharton amid interest from Liverpool, sources have told Football Insider.
The Eagles have been closely monitoring the market this summer and have seen a number of the midfielder's peers move to top Premier League clubs for huge fees already.
Elliot Anderson has completed a £116million move to Man City, while Sandro Tonali is closing in on a £100million move to Tottenham, changing Palace's stance.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Palace now feel they can demand a similar fee for Wharton if he is to move on this summer.
The Eagles are hopeful of keeping hold of the 22-year-old, who has established himself as a crucial player at Selhurst Park since his move from Blackburn in 2024.
Wharton played a key role in Palace winning the FA Cup and Conference League, and his trophy-winning experience alongside undoubted quality has seen his price skyrocket.
How much will Crystal Palace demand for Adam Wharton?
Football Insider initially revealed in March that Crystal Palace were asking for upwards of £70million to let Wharton leave Selhurst Park in the summer transfer window.
Throughout last season, he had attracted interest from clubs including the likes of Liverpool, Man United and Real Madrid, all of whom had scouts tracking his performances.
However, given the price tags involved in deals to sign similar players this summer, Crystal Palace are preparing to increase their asking price.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Yeah, well obviously Palace don't want to lose one of their best players.
"We’ve seen other clubs be busy in the market with midfielders. Obviously Spurs were linked with Wharton but now it looks like they're getting deals done from Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali.
"Palace are in box seat here, he’s under contract and obviously if other midfield targets are being signed by other clubs then it might see Wharton stay at Selhurst Park.
"With the ongoing fees for these players, Palace will be using that as a ballpark figure to try and demand that if anybody does firm up their interest.
"Fees of around £100million are being spoken about, so from Palace's point of view, why would they accept any less for Wharton?
"I think for now, Liverpool, their interest has probably cooled in Adam Wharton right now."
What is the latest on Liverpool's interest in Wharton?
Liverpool have been long-term admirers of Wharton and have been keeping close tabs on his development and potential availability for over 12 months now.
The addition of a new midfielder has been tipped as one of their priorities given a lack of depth and concerns about the performances of their current options.
However, Football Insider revealed on 3 July that Liverpool have cooled their interest in Wharton and Andoni Iraola does not see the midfielder as a priority target.
Meanwhile, Tottenham's signings of Mateus Fernandes and Mateus Fernandes, Man City landing Elliot Anderson and Man United eyeing Alex Scott means Wharton could stay at Palace.
The Eagles are now believed to be confident of keeping the playmaker at Selhurst Park beyond the summer window, and his bumper price tag will only strengthen their position.
