Daniel Gabbidon slams pointless West Ham transfer

By Matt Farr

Former-defender Daniel Gabbidon believes Reece Oxford would have been better off staying at West Ham in January.

Gabbidon stated on his personal Twitter account on Saturday that Slaven Bilic should bring the youngster back into the fold at the London Stadium.

Oxford, 18, was permitted to join Championship high-flyers Reading on loan for the remainder of the season, but he has struggled to break into the first-team setup.

The versatile defender has played just 38 minutes of first-team football since arriving at Reading in the January window, with Gabbidon branding the move as ‘pointless’.

Bilic had allowed Oxford to seek a loan move to continue his development following a lengthy injury setback, but his progress has stalled after being used only intermittently by manager Jaap Stam.

Following West Ham’s 2-1 defeat to Hull on Saturday, their fourth Premier League defeat in a row, Gabbidon called for Oxford to be handed a role back in the Hammers first-team squad.

The Hammers defence has come under increased criticism in recent weeks having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last nine Premier League matches, and Gabbidon believes Oxford could do no worse.

He also hinted at more youngsters being given the nod in the coming weeks, with the senior players in the squad not currently pulling their weight.

The defeat left them 14th in the Premier League, just six points clear of Hull and the relegation zone.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have £30million to splash out this summer on Premier League 25-year-old.
