Danny Mills has claimed Liverpool youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold “will be one of the world’s best players in three years”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England full-back insisted the 20-year-old is already an “outstanding” operator but will soar to an elite level when he masters the art of defending.
Alexander-Arnold has played an instrumental role in Liverpool’s remarkable campaign, which will end in Champions League glory if they defeat Tottenham in Madrid on 1 June.
His stunning corner kick in the remarkable 4-0 semi-final win over Barcelona last week demonstrated his capacity for brilliance at the elite level.
“He is absolutely outstanding,” Mills said of Alexander-Arnold to Football Insider. “It’s brilliant what he has done. He has one or two things to learn defensively and, when he does that, he will be one of the world’s best players, in about three to four years.
“As a defender, you get better with experience. First and foremost, Virgil van Dijk is an exceptional defender.
“Full-backs play in a different way to three or four years ago. In the modern game they are like wing-backs. The likes of Lee Dixon, Branislav Ivanovic, Nigel Winterburn, the emphasis was on defending.
“Players like Trent and Andy Robertson pour forward and create goals. I really like Robertson. He is very good in terms of his defensive qualities as well.”
Alexander-Arnold set a new Premier League record for a defender of 12 assists this season and, in all competitions, he laid on a remarkable 16 goals.
He is set to be named in the Liverpool side that contests the Champions League final against Spurs next month.
