Danny Mills has hailed Jack Grealish as a “great player” who will have a “big influence” on the outcome of the Championship play-offs.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender explained why he is a big admirer of the playmaker even though he’s not convinced he’s the outstanding player in the English second tier.
Grealish, 23, has helped catapult Villa to the play-off semi-finals since returning in March from a three-month lay-off with a shin injury.
He was instrumental in the team’s 10-match winning run and his 32 appearances this season have yielded six goals and six assists, including some memorable strikes.
Asked if Grealish is the best player in the Championship, Mills told Football Insider: “I think it’s difficult. The team is built around him, technically very, very good. I think you have to do it for two or three seasons. On his day, can be outstanding, but there would be a lot of Norwich players going ‘hang on a minute’, the amount of goals they’ve scored this season – Sheffield United similar.
“There are lots of good players, it’s very difficult to pick one outstanding player. Look what we had in the Premier League, is it Van Dijk, is it
Sterling? Son Heung-min couldn’t even get in to the top six, that’s how good it is.
“It’s subjective at times, there are a lot of good players and I think it depends how you fit in in your team environment. Grealish is a great player, he’s very influential in the way that Villa do things and no doubt will have a big influence on the playoffs.”
Grealish’s side will face West Brom in the semi-finals, with the first match at Villa Park on Saturday and the return at the Hawthorns on Tuesday week.
The winners will face wither Leeds or Derby County in the play-off final.
