Brighton may be among the Premier League clubs ready to make a big-money swoop for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
That is the verdict of ex-England and Leeds ace Danny Mills, who is a huge admirer of the 23-year-old and claims he is the most important member of Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Leeds are likely to have to cash in on some of their senior stars to raise transfer funds in the window that’s just opened after missing out on promotion with their defeat to Derby County in the play-offs on Wednesday.
“I can’t see why Premier League teams wouldn’t be interested in Phillips,” Mills told Football Insider. “You look at a team like Brighton, they could make a move, as well as other sides in the lower reaches of the Premier League. They’ll all have serious money to play with.
“Without doubt, Phillips is good enough for the Premier League. Can he play? Yes. Is he a good defensive midfielder? Yes. Does he have the potential to improve? Yes.
“I don’t want him to leave Leeds but if I was in charge of a Premier League club in the bottom half of the table I would be looking at him.”
Phillips has been one of the outstanding members of the Leeds side transformed by Marcelo Bielsa since he arrived last summer.
The Elland Road academy product was integral to the team’s third place Championship finish before they fell at the play-off semi-final hurdle in emotional scenes in midweek.
