Real thing: The Spanish giants still want to sign De Gea in the summer

By Harvey Byrne

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea believes that new Aston Villa loan signing Sam Johnstone will do a “great job” in the Midlands.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper completed his move to Steve Bruce’s side on Thursday afternoon, joining from Manchester United on a loan until the end of the season.

He is still waiting to make his senior appearance for United, but he has enjoyed loan spells at various Football League clubs including Preston, Doncaster and Yeovil.

He has clearly built up a friendship with Spanish number one de Gea in training and the world-class goalkeeper wished him luck on his personal Twitter account on Thursday.

Johnstone has made 81 senior appearances across his career keeping a total of 27 clean sheets.

His last loan spell came in the Championship with Preston, as he rejoined them on a 28-day in the 2016 winter window, where he played four times and conceded six without keeping a shut out.

However, he is still rated at United and he agreed a new deal that takes him up until 2018 in October.

Bruce will have looked to secure a safe pair of hands in this January window with Pierluigi Gollini making a number of mistakes, while Mark Bunn is only considered a backup option.

The experienced manager will now be hoping that Johnstone can help move his club up from 12th place in the English second tier.
