David Luiz has reminded Tottenham fans that Chelsea are top of the Premier League table “for a reason” ahead of their FA Cup showdown.
The two London clubs will put their title challenge to one side and contest for a place in the FA Cup final on Saturday afternoon at Wembley.
The winner of that match will face either Manchester City or Arsenal and will also look to build confidence from that win at Wembley and take it into the title race.
Chelsea are currently four points ahead of Spurs, but they have faltered in recent weeks suffering defeats against Crystal Palace and most recently Manchester United.
It has seen their lead reduced from ten points to four but centre-back Luiz issued this message to his rivals fans ahead of the weekend fixture.
“Tottenham are playing very well,” Luiz told the club’s official website. “But also we are top of the table for a reason and we still have to play a lot of football, so we need to look forward and play the next games.”
Since making a return to Stamford Bridge in the summer, Luiz has been a key figure behind their success during this campaign.
After a rocky start, manager Antonio Conte opted to play three at the back following the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal in September.
Since then, they have marched up the table, winning 13 consecutive matches since that defeat at the Emirates before it was ended by Spurs in January at White Hart Lane.
During that game, attacking midfielder Dele netted a brace, thanks to his two wonderfully timed headers as he will be looking to cause a threat once again at the weekend.
In other Tottenham news, Jamie Carragher believes this 23-year-old star will be huge for the Chelsea clash.
