David Thompson: Liverpool must do this if they finish in top four, praises duo after West Brom win

By Will Butcher

David Thompson believes Liverpool must make significant improvements to their squad in the summer transfer window if they achieve Champions League qualification.

Sunday afternoon’s 1-0 win over West Brom at the Hawthorns saw Jurgen Klopp’s side edge closer to a place in the Premier League’s top four come the end of the season.

Posting on his personal Instagram account, former Reds midfielder Thompson claimed Liverpool must make “massive improvements” to their squad if they do indeed qualify.

Thomspon also praised the influence of Roberto Firmino and Simon Mignolet during the win against Tony Pulis’ side, as they held on to a narrow victory.

Liverpool took the lead in first-half injury time, as Lucas Leiva flicked on a free-kick to find Firmino ghosting in at the back post who nodded home from close range.

Firmino’s second goal in two games ensured all three points for the Merseyside giants, but they had to rely on Mignolet to deny the likes of Matt Phillips, Nacer Chadli and Hal Robson-Kanu.

The win sees Liverpool move on to 66 points in third, but Man City have a game in hand with 64 points in fourth. Man United have played two less games, on 60 points in fifth.

The Reds will be hoping to further consolidate their place in the top four against Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday.
