Paul Robinson has tipped Dean Henderson to become the first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester United this season.

The ex-Spurs man, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said there was "no reason" why Henderson, 24, cannot take over the reins from David De Gea this season.

De Gea featured in goal for Manchester United's 5-1 over Leeds United.

Henderson was not available for the opener due to fitness concerns after injury and Covid-19.

As confirmed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday (August 15th), the shot-stopper is recovering from his layoff.

De Gea has been a regular for Manchester United since his Old Trafford bow in 2011, with 442 appearances across all competitions.

However, Robinson believes it is time for Henderson to take up the mantle from the Spanish keeper.

“I think when he [Henderson] comes back in, he plays," he told Football Insider's Ewan Kingsbury.

“He did well when he came in at the end of last season but was really unlucky with the injury at the Euros.

“Now he’s got a situation with Covid, so wasn’t available for the first game of the season.

“He didn’t put a foot wrong last season when he was given the gloves by Ole.

"I can’t see any reason why he won't be United’s number one this season when he’s fit and available.”

Henderson made 13 appearances in the Premier League last season, with De Gea making 26.

United visit Southampton on Sunday for their second top-flight game of the campaign.
