Newcastle United are close to agreeing a new contract with wide man Jacob Murphy, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

A source has told Football Insider that Murphy is in advanced talks with Newcastle over a long-term contract after a breakthrough, and all parties expect a deal to now be done.

That would be a blow to his admirers at home and abroad, who include German, Turkish and Portugese big hitters Bayer Leverkusen, Galatasaray and Porto.

He has also been on the radar in recent months of Leeds, Burnley, Southampton, Watford and Scottish giants Rangers.

Newcastle recently triggered an option in Murphy's deal to extend it by 12 months until the summer of 2022.

But they recognise that was not enough to tie down the £3million-valued star.

Murphy, who was signed from Norwich City for £10million in 2017, has played some of the best football of his career since dropping deeper to a wing-back role last season.

He ended 2020-21 with three goals and four assists in 31 games across all competitions after forcing his way into the side.

The Englishman spent the previous campaign on loan with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday during a spell when he went 18 months without appearing for Newcastle.

But Steve Bruce kept the door open for Murphy at St James' Park and was rewarded last term.

Murphy has been a long-term target of Rangers, and they were keen on a move in the January window and last summer.
