Basel defender Manuel Akanji is on the verge of joining Borussia Dortmund for £20million, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claimed on their live transfer blog on Saturday [02:40pm] that Liverpool and West Ham had both wanted to snap up Akanji, 22, but he is now poised to join Bundesliga giants Dortmund.
It is understood that West Brom and Southampton were also interested in the four-times Switzerland international.
However Dortmund are said to have moved quickly to beat the Premier League quartet in the hunt to snap up Akajni, who has been extremely impressive for Basel in the Champions League this season, helping the Swiss side keep clean sheets against Manchester United, Benfica and CSKA Moscow.
The defensive colossus, who stands at 6ft 2in, has made 28 appearances in all competitions this term, scoring two goals in the process, with his most recent coming against St Gallen in December.
Football Insider verdict
Akanji looks like a very solid centre-back who could have easily been a regular starter for any of the four Premier League teams chasing him. However they may have been put off by the £20million price-tag as that could be seen as too much for someone who is unproven in one of Europe’s bigger leagues and has had a pretty easy rise with Swiss giants Basel. His Champions League performances have been very good though and he was in great form against Man United as Basel won 1-0 at Old Trafford in November. He has Romelu Lukaku in his back pocket on that night, so that may be why Dortmund have seen it fit to splash the cash.
In other Liverpool news, it has been confirmed that this attacker has left Anfield for a mid-table club.
