Defoe bombshell: Why this report provides Tottenham with a huge opportunity this summer
COMMENT by Amir Mir
Tottenham must do everything in their power to ensure that Jermain Defoe returns to the north London club next season, after a report claimed that he could be available on a free transfer this summer.
Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope claimed on his personal Twitter account that if Sunderland are relegated from the Premier League then Defoe can leave the club on a free transfer in the summer.
David Moyes’ side currently sit bottom of the table, seven points from safety, with the likelihood that they will be playing Championship football next term.

A move for Defoe would give Mauricio Pochettino a huge opportunity to add that much-needed quality and depth to his title-chasing squad.
Summer signing Vincent Janssen has not lived up to expectations and Spurs are in need of a striker that can complement/be a valuable back-up to their star man Harry Kane.

Not many players in the Premier League can do it better than Defoe, who has been in stunning form during the past two campaigns despite his side facing relegation battles.
In his last 61 league matches, Defoe has found the back of the net on 29 occasions, constantly proving that he still has that lethal finish in his locker.
The 34-year-old recently earned a recall to the England set-up and scored within 20 minutes of his return to further showcase what he can offer.
All of this would benefit Spurs in their quest to lift the English title. And, if they get him on a free, they’ve got nothing to lose but his wages.
In other Tottenham news, the club are plotting a move for this £17million goal machine with London rivals also keen.
