Defoe tipped to re-join Sunderland after confirmed Rangers news - pundit

Danny Mills has suggested Jermain Defoe could re-sign Sunderland after quitting Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent, the ex-Premier League and England defender claimed Defoe may now want to have a “swansong” at one of his former clubs.

Rangers confirmed on Wednesday (12 January) the veteran striker had left the club after three years at Ibrox.

He moved into a player-coach role under Steven Gerrard at the beginning of the season.

However, he was taken off the coaching staff by Giovanni van Bronckhorst and has only managed one appearance under the new manager.

Asked where Defoe could continue his playing career, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It would be at a lower level.

“He may decide to stay in punditry and keep doing that or whether have a bit of a swansong somewhere. It’s up to him.

“I don’t know where home is for him or where he considers home.

“Maybe he could go out on high at one of his old clubs or somewhere where he fancies at a lower level, perhaps.

“Sunderland could be one, quite possibly. He’s not going to be concerned about the money at this stage of the season.

“He’ll just think ‘You know what, give it three or four months towards the end of the season, let’s give it a go and see what happens’.”

Defoe ends his spell at Rangers with 32 goals and 10 assists in 74 appearances across all competitions.

The ex-England international was at Sunderland from January 2015 until July 2017 and scored 37 times in 93 games across all competitions.

In other news, Rangers have been tipped to sign a ‘diamond’ to replace an Ibrox ace after a report in the last 24 hours.
