Derek Johnstone delivers verdict on Rangers signing, states he must replace this senior man
By Derek Smithson
Derek Johnstone has hailed the signing of new Rangers defender Bruno Alves and believes he should replace Lee Wallace as the club captain.
The Gers have made a strong start to the transfer window by recruiting experienced centre-back Alves, plus completing a deal for midfielder Ryan Jack from Aberdeen.
Pedro Caixinha has moved quickly to start the summer overhaul in his squad as he looks to get the Ibrox outfit competing at the top-end of the Scottish league table next season.
Alves has signed a two-year contract at Rangers after leaving Italian club Cagliari and is a Portgual international.
The 35-year-old is coming towards the latter stages of his career, but is still in a good condition and wants to prove himself in Scotland.

Johnstone believes Rangers have done extremely well to sign a player with such quality and has suggested that he would be an “ideal captain”.
“I would have no qualms if Pedro said ‘Bruno, you are my captain’,” Johnstone wrote in the Glasgow Evening Times. “He will be at the heart of that defence, he can talk to everyone around him and he can lead by example. That is maybe what Rangers have been lacking.
“That is no disrespect to Lee Wallace. He has been a good captain of the club and his performances are the inspiration for those around him. But if you are looking for somebody that is going to galvanise people, being at centre-half certainly helps. For me, Bruno would be the ideal captain.
Alves has proven himself during his playing career and helped Portugal win the European Championship in 2016.
The powerful defender has also won league title in Portugal, Russia and Turkey to make up a formidable CV.
He is expected to bring huge leadership qualities to the Gers side and Johnstone feels he should replace left-back Wallace as captain.
Wallace, 29, has become an extremely popular figure during his 252 appearances for the Scottish giants and the situation would have to be dealt with carefully.
