Detailed study reveals Tottenham stars dominate across Europe - senior man shock table topper
Tottenham’s senior stars have been dominating with some of the best performing players in comparison to their counterparts across Europe, according to a detailed study.
The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) claim in their weekly Football Observatory study (issue 220, 26/03) that based on a number of factors – rigour, recovery, distribution, take on, chance creation and shooting – that the Lilywhites had at least one of their players in the top-ten performing individuals for each position, with all but one role having a Spurs star in the top five.
Christian Eriksen was the leader for what the study considered box-to-box midfielders, beating the likes of Napoli’s Marek Hamsik and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, while Hugo Lloris was a shock table topper for the goalkeepers, with Roma’s Alisson Becker in second, and Manchester United’s David De Gea – widely considered the best shot stopper in the Premier League – nowhere in the top ten.
Davinson Sanchez was second for centre backs, Heung-min Son fourth among wingers, Ben Davies the fifth ranked full back, Harry Kane the third placed forward and Eric Dier eighth on the list of defensive midfielders, and there were few other clubs to have so many of their players on the lists.
Football Insider verdict
If there were any doubts that Mauricio Pochettino was building a well rounded squad of talented players, they can be dropped right away. While the study might only be able to operate on the numbers, and fail to take into what we as fans can see with our own eyes – David De Gea’s exclusion an obvious red flag – it provides a detailed and well rounded view of who is performing well among their peers. The highlights are obviously Eriksen and Lloris, but Sanchez deserves a mention for his second place, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young defenders. However, these numbers will mean nothing if they cannot turn their performances into trophies and success, and that has got to be the next step this talented squad take.
