Djed Spence may leave Tottenham soon after major new development - Agbonlahor

Djed Spence may leave Tottenham on loan in 2023, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Spence will have to work to get his chance under Antonio Conte.

The 21-year-old remained an unused substitute in Spurs’ final pre-season game with Roma on Saturday (30 July).

As quoted by football.london after the game, Conte insisted the right-back will have to “work a lot” if he wants to feature in the Premier League.

The Tottenham manager told the same outlet last month (19 July) that Spence was a “club signing” but he sanctioned the deal as he believes he can become an important player.

“It happens at football clubs,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I remember when Spurs brought in Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton, they might not have been the manager’s picks but they turned out to be great assets to the club.

“Maybe sometimes when it’s a young player, the club will sign them because they see he’s going to be an asset, put him on a long-term contract.

“It might not work out for him this season, he might end up going out on loan in January and playing football in the Championship again.

“Or he’ll have to wait and bide his time and put in a good performance in a Carabao Cup game before he breaks into the first team for the Premier League games.

“He’s got to work for it. I’m sure Conte will give him a chance and he’s got to prove that he’s good enough when he gets a chance.”
