Done deal: Aston Villa midfielder seals move to league rivals after agreeing terms

By Harvey Byrne

Aston Villa midfielder Leandro Bacuna has sealed a move to Championship rivals Reading after agreeing terms with the Berkshire-based club, it was confirmed on Sunday.

The Royals announced via their official Twitter account and website that the 25-year-old central midfielder had left the Midlands outfit for the Madejski Stadium, agreeing a four-year contract.

Bacuna is the fourth senior player to leave Aston Villa this summer, following each of Jordan Veretout, Carlos Sanchez and Jordan Amavi through the Villa Park exit doors.

He leaves after making just one appearance in each of Steve Bruce’s side’s opening three matches of the 2017-18 campaign, but he had made 131 appearances in total for the club following his move from Groningen in the summer of 2013.

During his four years at the club Bacuna provided plenty of versatility with the ability to play in the centre of midfield, on the right and as a right-back, but he will now be looking to help Reading win promotion after their play-off final defeat last season.

Football Insider verdict:

Given that Aston Villa have added both Glenn Whelan and Ahmed Elmohamady it was clear that Bacuna no longer had a future in the already large squad and this deal will suit all parties depending on the figure received. Reading themselves aren’t known for spending large amounts and have spoken about running on a tight budget this summer. However, they would have likely paid upwards of £1million for Bacuna and therefore this deal certainly suits Villa as they look to pass financial fair play.
