Done deal: Defender signs after Celtic agree terms

By Dominic Toner

Celtic defender Mikael Lustig has signed a contract extension, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bhoys confirmed on their official website that the 30-year-old has agreed a new deal which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2018/19 season.

He had just six months remaining on his contract, but has now committed his long-term future to the reigning Scottish Champions.

Lustig has been a crucial player for Celtic since he joined in 2012 and has been a constant performer under manager Brendan Rodgers this season.

He has made 32 appearances across all competitions this campaign, chipping in with one goal and supplying assists.

The Sweden international predominately plays as a right-back for the Bhoys, but has also been used as an emergency centre-back at times.

Lustig is currently the first-choice right-back ahead of team-mate Cristian Gamboa and that looks set to continue for the immediate future.

He has won two Scottish Premiership titles during his time with Celtic and looks set to lift another this season, with Rodgers’ side currently 19 points clear of second-placed Rangers and with a game in hand.

Lustig has made 168 appearances since he joined from Danish club Rosenborg and now looks set for many more.

In other Celtic transfer news, the club should complete an attacker deal by the end of the week.
