Door opens for Rangers to sign Thierry Small after source's reveal - expert

Alan Hutton has suggested there is an “opportunity” for Southampton’s Thierry Small to join Rangers this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said that although it is difficult when a team gets relegated, it opens spaces within the starting XI.

On 22 May, sources told this site that the Light Blues have registered their interest in signing the 18-year-old from Southampton.

The Gers have been in touch with the recently relegated side to be kept informed about developments involving Small in the coming months.

The left-back has spent the second half of the current season on loan at fellow Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.

Small has featured regularly in Stephen Robinson’s side operating mainly as a left-back or left-sided midfielder in an impressive campaign that saw them in the top six for the first time since the second half split was introduced.

The defender’s current contract at St Mary’s runs until 2024 after joining from Port Vale in November 2022.

Hutton suggested the Saints’ relegation could make a deal for Small more complicated.

It is never easy when you get relegated,” he told Football Insider.

Players leave, players come in, they have got different ideas. Opportunities can open up to go and play in the team.

I think there will be a lot of situations that need ironed out when you get relegated, I have been there myself and it is very difficult.

You have to wait and see but there is always an opportunity.
