Sources: Douglas Luiz tells friends he wants to join Arsenal as new talks held

Arsenal are still working on a deal to sign Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, sources have told Football Insider.

The Gunners failed to land the Brazilian, 24, in the recent summer window after submitting a series of bids worth up to £25million.

Villa fended off the interest after sticking to their £30million valuation of Luiz.

But that has not put Arsenal off and they are planning to reignite their pursuit of the player ahead of the January window.

They are maintaining a dialogue with Luiz’s camp and talks have been held since the window shut.

Luiz has told friends he is keen to join the London giants and would still like the deal to happen.

Villa have held talks with him over a new contract but have yet to secure an agreement.

The midfielder’s deal is set to expire at the end of this season and he can discuss a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January.

Luiz has started just twice in the Premier League this term amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future.

The nine-cap Brazil international, who made his Selecao debut in 2019, was not named in Tite’s latest senior squad with the World Cup in Qatar on the horizon.

The midfield star, once of Man City, made 35 appearances across all competitions last term – notching two goals and three assists.

Arsenal are in the market for midfield reinforcements following injuries to Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey in the early weeks of the season.

The Gunners sit atop the Premier League after six rounds of fixtures, while Aston Villa are languishing in 17th place.
