BT pundit Chris Sutton has torn into Everton after they suffered another Europa League defeat against Lyon at Goodison Park on Thursday night.

Ronald Koeman appears to be running out of lives on Merseyside as his side slumped to a 2-1 home loss, meaning their chances of qualifying for the knock-out rounds after Christmas are now left hanging by a thread.

Things haven’t been much better for the Toffees in their Premier League too, having won just two of their opening eight games after spending £150million in the summer on rebuilding their squad.

Former Blackburn and Chelsea striker Sutton has now slammed Everton for overspending in the summer and thinks that they are seriously lacking in the final third.

“Everton outclassed by Lyon in a must win game. The fight was there, but the quality was lacking badly at both ends,” he said on his personal Twitter account on Thursday night.

When confronted by someone about his insistence on talking about Everton’s spending habits, Sutton added: “Spending £150million is dreadful.”

Everton remained bottom of Group E in the Europa League after Thursday’s games and are now four points shy of the top two spots after three games.

Atalanta, who beat the Toffees earlier this season, and Lyon lead the way while minnows Apollon Limassol are also above the Evertonians after earning two draws.

Next up for the Toffees is a clash with Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday in a game which could potentially seal the fate of under-pressure manager Koeman.
