Four Everton senior players left at home for clash v Lyon as Unsworth rings changes
By Danny Wright
David Unsworth has decided to leave Michael Keane, Wayne Rooney, Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka at home for Everton’s Europa League clash against Lyon in France on Thursday night.
The four senior players have been pivotal parts of the Toffees line-up this season, but it now seems as though caretaker boss Unsworth has decided to rest them in order to keep the clubs’ hopes of European football after Christmas alive.
Everton are bottom of Group E after three games and are yet to win after suffering defeats to Atalanta and Lyon and a dire draw with Cypriot minnows Apollon.
Unsworth is now expected to ring the changes to his side for Thursday night’s visit to the Stade des Lumieres as he looks to replace the senior stars.
“They’ve played a lot of games and I wanted to freshen it up,” he said, as quoted by Everton’s official Twitter account on Wednesday evening in his pre-match press conference.

Unsworth is yet to see the Toffees win a game since he took temporary charge of the first-team after Koeman was sacked last week.
He saw the Toffees dumped out of the League Cup by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge a week ago before having to cope with a Premier League defeat to Leicester.
The regular Under-23 boss is among one of the names that is most widely tipped to be handed the job on a permanent role and a win at Lyon this week will do little to harm his chances of doing just that.
