Early team news: Arsenal first-team ace axed to reserves ahead of Crystal Palace clash

By Danny Wright

Alex Iwobi will take no part in Arsenal’s visit to Crystal Palace on Monday.

The 20-year-old ace was named in the Gunners Under-23 team to play Reading on the same day after he failed to feature in last week’s 3-0 win against West Ham.

In a post on the club’s official Twitter page, it was announced that Iwobi will be lining up alongside Carl Jenkinson, Mathieu Debuchy and Rob Holding in a reserve team rife with top-level experience.

Iwobi has been a crucial part of Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans this season and has played a total of 36 matches across all competitions.

In those games, the nine-time Nigerian international has scored four goals and provided seven assists – although the last time he found the net was in the January loss to Watford.

The winger has not started a game since the loss to Liverpool in early March with the latest news casting further doubt over his immediate future in the first team.

Iwobi is a product of the Arsenal academy and has made 57 appearances since breaking onto the scene in 2015.

The development team that faces Reading also includes January signing Cohen Bramall and first-team flop Yaya Sanogo.

Wenger and his men travel to Selhurst Park on Monday night in their latest Premier League clash.

A win could see them move up to fifth in the table and a spot in the Champions League places remains on the cards having played fewer matches than all other teams in the league.

In other Arsenal news, Daniel Gabbidon has said why this 23-year-old doesn’t play every week.
