Edwin van der Sar tipped for Man United role after 'big surprise' confirmed - pundit
Danny Mills has tipped Edwin van der Sar to land an executive role at Man United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Man City and Leeds United defender delivered his verdict after the “big surprise” news that Ralf Rangnick is the new Austria manager.
It was confirmed on Friday (29 April) that the 63-year-old will combine his consultancy role at Man United with his new job with Austria.
But Mills has suggested the German’s role at Old Trafford will be “diminished” which could open the door for Van Der Sar who is currently the chief executive of Ajax.
“Putting Rangnick as head coach of Austria is a little bit of a strange one,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“He’s obviously a big part of the Red Bull system and is German so knows that area and knows the players very well.

“Going into an international role is the biggest surprise after it not really working out at Manchester United.
“I’ve said all along he is a very good football operator at building things so going in as technical director of Austria and working at Manchester United, I’d get it. But head coach? It’s a strange one.
“It looks like his say at Man United is going to be relatively diminished.
“I just wonder if that means someone like Van Der Sar might be coming into Man United as a sporting director or technical director. Obviously, Ten Hag worked with him at Ajax.
“Even Marc Overmars, I know he left in strange terms at Ajax but if he’s good at what he does then he’ll get a second chance.
“Maybe part of the deal was Ten Hag got to bring his own sporting director in.”
