Jeff Stelling reveals what 'surprised' him after Rubin Colwill's Cardiff City equaliser vs Wrexham
Cardiff City star Rubin Colwill sparked absolute joy and pandemonium with a last-gasp equaliser against Wrexham.
It looked like Phil Parkinson's side were set to claim bragging rights on Monday, 17 August, at the Cardiff City Stadium as the new Championship season kicked off.
The Red Dragons had led the game against their Welsh rivals since the sixth minute, and had barely had a scratch left on them away from home.
However, with almost the final kick of the game, Cardiff City's No.10 stepped up just outside the penalty area to fire past a helpless Anthony Patterson.
After notching nine goals and eight assists in 2025-26, it was almost expected that the 24-year-old would have a key impact in the final stages.
Jeff Stelling raised a very important question following the scenes about the Wales international at the Cardiff City Stadium, though.
Rubin Colwill decision questioned vs Wrexham
Brian Barry-Murphy nearly had some more very serious questions to answer, saved by one of his most talented players in the dying seconds.
Speaking live on talkSPORT (18 August, 6:10am), Stelling said: "It was Colwill who got the goal there, by the way. I was surprised that he didn't start," he said.
"Only on the basis that, in the early days of the season, he's always the man. He scored on the opening day last season, and and the season before that, he scored in the second game.
"And the season before that, he scored on the opening day of the season. He always gets off. I don't know what he does, but he must look after himself during the summer.
It was already an important point for the Bluebirds, and not because of their position in the Championship table, but as a confidence builder in 2026-27.
What are Cardiff City's chances of securing safety?
Confidence was already high in south Wales after winning the League One title last term, and now it could be even higher thanks to Colwill.
Both of the Colwill brothers came off the bench, and Stelling has certainly made an interesting point, strengthened by their impacts in the second half.
Currently, one major bookmaker has Barry-Murphy's side priced at 5/4 to be one of the clubs relegated, while a top-eight finish is 11/2.
At the complete opposite end of the table, Cardiff City are priced at 20/1 to win promotion to the Premier League, which would be for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
