Scotland next manager: Alex Neil odds tumble after Ange Postecoglou twist
Alex Neil is seen as increasingly likely to seal the Scotland manager’s job after his odds tumbled with one UK bookmaker.
The current Millwall boss could soon find himself back north of the border after Steve Clarke’s resignation from the Tartan Army.
Ange Postecoglou had been the bookies’ favourite to take over, but the former Celtic coach has since been appointed as Al-Nassr’s new manager.
Now, one bookmaker has slashed the odds of Neil taking over as Scotland manager to 4/1, making him the joint-third favourite for the role.
The 45-year-old has been at Millwall since 2024 and guided the Championship club to a third-place finish last season, before they lost in the playoff semi-finals.
Neil has not managed in Scotland since 2015, after he left Hamilton Academical for Norwich City.
Can Alex Neil be a success at Scotland?
Neil has no doubt had a mixed career in England since he left Hamilton in 2015.
After a successful few years at Norwich City, where he guided the club to the Premier League, he was unable to repeat this success at Preston North End.
In 2022, he moved to Sunderland and was able to finally guide the club out of League One.
However, his stay was short-lived as he controversially opted to move to Stoke City shortly after their return to the Championship.
At the Potters, he was unable to get the club into the promotion mix and was once again sacked in December 2023.
Since moving to Millwall, he has seen increased success and was a game away from promotion to the Premier League last season.
However, with Neil never managing on an international level before, it remains to be seen if he can succeed at Scotland.
Who else is linked to the Scotland job?
As it stands, the current favourite for the job is David Moyes at 3/1.
The Everton boss has been heavily linked with the role since Clarke’s departure, and this has continued this week.
Falkirk manager John McGlynn also remains in the mix at 7/2 after a stellar campaign in the Scottish Premiership, which saw the newly promoted side finish in the top half.
Steven Naismith is also considered a contender at 4/1, while Barry Ferguson remains in the running at 8/1.
