Swansea City are in advanced talks to sign former Southampton striker Ross Stewart on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 30-year-old left Southampton on 30 June following the expiry of his contract, placing a number of clubs across the Championship on alert over his availability.

Swansea have now moved ahead of rivals in their pursuit, and are now confident of reaching a full agreement with the player to move to South Wales.

Stewart is highly regarded by a number of clubs in the second tier, not just for his goalscoring exploits, but also his ability to bring teammates into play.

The striker scored eight goals and provided two assists in just 11 Championship starts last season, desipte having struggled with injuries throughout his spell at St Mary's.

Having opted to leave Southampton in search of more regular playing time elsewhere, a move to Swansea now looks set to be agreed as part of their ambitious transfer plans.

The addition of a new striker has become a priority for Swansea following the departure of Liam Cullen, while they are bracing to lose last season's top goalscorer Zan Vipotnik.

Stewart's availability placed Swansea on high alert earlier this summer, alognside a number of their Championship rivals, and they are now set to win the race.

While the Scotland international has also struggled with fitness issues in recent seasons, his 33 appearances last time out have given hope that he can remain available.

His goalscoring record in the second tier is impressive, while he will be able to provide competition for the current options and play a regular role in the starting XI.

Stewart's likely arrival at Swansea this summer comes amid ongoing speculation over the future of Vipotnik, who had been key for the Swans last season.

Football Insider revealed in April that Swansea would demand a sigificant fee to sell the striker, having placed a £15million asking price on him amid interest from Premier League clubs.

Brighton are one of a number of top flight clubs to have considered a move for the striker, while there is also growing interest from clubs across Europe.

Coventry City and West Ham are also among the English clubs to have shown an interest, while the likes of Sporting CP, Strasbourg an Benfica are also keen.

The striker put pen to paper on a new deal in South Wales in March, and that should allow Swansea to maximise his value when an offer does arrive.
