Birmingham and Wrexham in transfer battle to sign Romeo Amane
Championship trio Birmingham, Wrexham and Sheffield United are all eyeing moves for Rapid Vienna midfielder Romeo Amane, sources have told Football Insider.
All three clubs are eyeing promotion pushes to the Premier League next term and have been keeping tabs on the 23-year-old in recent months.
The all-action midfielder has impressed at Rapid Vienna since joining them in January 2025 from Swedish club BK Hacken.
Amane notched one goal and four assists in 49 games in all competitions this season, and could be about to move to the Championship next term.
Birmingham, Wrexham and Sheffield United all have him in their sights, and believe he is a player who would provide an improvement to their squad.
Amane is still developing as a player, and a move to the English second tier would be a big step up for him.
Romeo Amane to bring UEFA Conference League experience to the Championship
Amane has only been at Rapid Vienna for 18 months, but he could already be set for a big move to England in the coming weeks.
High-profile duo Birmingham and Wrexham are looking to go one better next term after narrowly missing out on the play-offs, while Sheffield United are hoping that a rebuild can have them competing in 2026-27.
Amane is vastly experienced despite his age, as he spent three full seasons in BK Hacken's first team before earning his move to Vienna.
The starlet has already tasted experience of three separate UEFA Conference League campaigns, and even played 10 games in the Europa League back in 2023.
The Ivorian has already outlined himself as a player with a big future ahead of him, and now appears destined to move to the Championship for next term.
Primarily a holding or box-to-box midfielder by trade, Amane has predominantly operated as one of two deep-lying midfielders in Rapid's 3-4-2-1 formation.
Birmingham line up ex-Man United chief for key role
Football Insider revealed last week that former Manchester United and Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth is being lined up for the director of football role at Birmingham.
The ambitious Blues view the 55-year-old as a key target alongside ex-Sunderland chief Kristjaan Speakman and their current academy director Mike Rigg.
All three candidates are in line to be interviewed for the role, as the club's American owners work towards getting the right man in place.
The second city outfit have ambitious of growing to eventually challenge the elite of English football, and Ashworth's appointment would be a big statement of intent.
