Coventry City are prepared to go above their recent offer of £20million for Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, sources have told Football Insider.

The Sky Blues saw their club-record offer knocked back by the Seagulls last week, but the two clubs are still in discussions over a potential deal.

The 24-year-old is about to enter the final year of his deal at the Amex Stadium, and Brighton are trying to maximise their final chance to cash in as much as possible.

Coventry are hoping that they will be able to reach a "compromise" with Brighton that can get the transfer over the line, but they are prepared to up their offering if needed.

Frank Lampard's side have identified the stopper as their "top target" after his eye-catching loan spell last term.

The newly-promoted side are willing to go above and beyond to nail down their preferred option, but are hoping that they won't have to put much more cash on the table.

Coventry desperate to keep league-leading Carl Rushworth

Rushworth's future at Brighton will be settled this summer, as they are reluctant to risk potentially losing him on a free this time next year.

There have been few indications so far that the Englishman is being considered to replace Bart Verbruggen as number one next term, creating growing speculation that he will be sold.

Coventry are desperate to take him back to the CBS Arena permanently, after their success was built upon his solidity last term.

The youngster's final tally of 17 clean sheets was the highest of any gloveman in the Championship, while he also led the entire division in the goals prevented metric.

Lampard and Co. are confident that Rushworth has what it takes to be a capable Premier League starter, and are pushing to secure his services as a result.

They have fallen short of Brighton's valuation of their star at the moment, but they have every intention of closing that gap in the coming weeks.

Callum Wilson 'likely' to agree Coventry City return as Frank Lampard plan revealed by ex-coach

Callum Wilson 'likely' to return to Coventry

Former Coventry assistant manager Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Callum Wilson is "likely" to return to the CBS Arena this summer.

He labelled the transfer link as "one to watch" in the coming weeks, and expects that Wilson will be keen to return to his boyhood club.

The veteran striker came through the Sky Blues' academy ranks as a youngster, and has now been linked with a return as he is set to leave West Ham as a free agent.

Brown is adamant that the chance to remain in the Premier League will be of huge appeal to Wilson, not least since it could come with the club where it all began for him.
