Bolton Wanderers have agreed to sign Liverpool youngster Luca Stephensonsources have told Football Insider.

The 22-year-old midfielder is set to have a medical at the Trotters on Wednesday ahead of completing a permanent move.

Football Insider previously broke the news that Bolton were in advanced talks to sign Stephenson.

The midfielder had a standout campaign at Dundee United last season, where he made 29 appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

This saw clubs such as Rangers and Celtic linked to the Liverpool player earlier this year.

However, Bolton are now set to complete the signing ahead of their return to the Championship in the 2026-27 campaign.

Who is Luca Stephenson?

Stephenson started off his career in Sunderland’s academy, before departing for Liverpool in 2018.

After signing his first professional contract in 2020, he went on to captain their Under-18s and Under-21s regularly.

In the 2023-24 campaign, he was loaned out to Barrow and quickly became a regular.

Deployed at right-wing back, he helped the club finish eighth in League Two, as they missed out on the playoffs by one point.

Following this success, he was snapped up by Dundee United on loan for the 2024-25 campaign and helped the club finish fourth in the Scottish Premiership and qualify for Europe.

For his performances, Stephenson was awarded both the fans’ and clubs’ Young Player of the season, with his loan spell being renewed for the 2025-26 season.

After another successful campaign at the Tangerines, he was eyed by multiple clubs, with Bolton now set to win the race for his signature.

How good is Stephenson?

According to Fotmob on 30 June, Stephenson had an outstanding 2025-26 season in the Scottish Premiership.

Per 90 minutes, he was averaging 0.18 goals, a 0.08 xG, 0.77 shots, 0.18 assists, a 0.13 xA, 1.02 chances created and 5.52 defensive contributions in the Scottish top-flight.

If these stats can be replicated, he would no doubt be a massive asset for Bolton next season.

Given his age, he could also develop into a top star, which has undoubtedly encouraged the Wanderers to get the signing over the line over the past couple of weeks.
