Emile Smith Rowe faces extended spell out of Arsenal XI after injury update - Campbell

Emile Smith Rowe may find it hard to break into the Arsenal starting XI this season if Gabriel Martinelli starts the season well, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Gunners and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Smith Rowe, 22, got injured at the worst time.

Smith Rowe has been injured during Arsenal’s pre-season.

Speaking to club media (4 August), three players out of Smith Rowe, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kieran Tierney and Fabio Vieira trained on Thursday afternoon.

Those who trained are expected to be available for Friday’s trip to Crystal Palace.

When asked by Football Insider if Smith Rowe faces an extended spell on the bench amid Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka’s form, Campbell said: “Welcome to life at the top.

“This is the way it is. Unfortunately, there is only eleven who can play.

“The great thing is, Emile Smith Rowe is still so young. He also makes a difference from the bench, he showed that last season.

“There is European games as well so he will get game time. Whenever he gets a chance he has to take it, this is the important part. At big clubs, you have to take your chances.

“The stakes have risen at Arsenal. The levels have gone up.

“The likes of Smith Rowe are going to have to step up.

“Getting injured in pre-season is always difficult. He probably needs a couple of games under his belt to get ready. That might come behind closed doors.

“He needs to get on the pitch and start feeling this team.”
