Emiliano Martinez wants to quit Aston Villa and join giants - sources

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has his sights set on joining a top club this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the 30-year-old is keen to fulfil his ambitions of playing at a higher level and winning more silverware following his World Cup triumph last year (2022).

Martinez has been widely linked with a host of top clubs ahead of the summer window, including the likes of Chelsea and Man United.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (15 May) that incoming Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is set to make a goalkeeper signing one of his top priorities in the summer window.

It is believed that Martinez features on his shortlist, alongside Brentford goalkeeper David Raya and Inter Milan shot-stopper Andre Onana.

Martinez’s contract at Villa Park, which earns him a reported £120,000-a-week, runs until June 2027.

Therefore it is likely to take a huge bid to persuade the Midlands giants to part with the goalkeeper in the off-season.

Martinez, who joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020, has even worn the captain’s armband for Unai Emery’s side on several occasions this term.

He has notched 13 clean sheets in 35 appearances this term as Villa push for European qualification in the 2023-24 campaign.

The 30-year-old has gone public with his desire to compete at the highest level and win more silverware following his World Cup triumph.

Both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy have failed to nail down a starting berth at Stamford Bridge under three different managers this season.

Chelsea will not have European football to offer prospective signings in the 2023-24 campaign but are nonetheless expected to undertake another aggressive recruitment drive this summer.
