French top flight side Bordeaux have opened talks over the potential transfer capture of Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, according to a report.
RMC Sport claim on the live transfer blog on their website (08/01, 4:21pm) that the Ligue 1 club are keen on securing the Serbian’s services in January, and have begun discussions with the 23-year-old’s representatives.
However, there are said to be doubts over whether Bordeaux would be available to afford Newcastle’s asking price or the player’s wages, as they mull over a potential loan or a permanent deal for the 33-cap international.
Mitrovic, a fans’ favourite on Tyneside for his passionate displays, has made just seven appearances for the club this season having fallen out of favour under manager Rafael Benitez, and has not been included in the last six match day squads.
He is contracted at St James’ Park until 2020, and has managed to score 17 goals in 72 appearances for the Magpies.
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle will know that Mitrovic is the most saleable of the assets that they are willing to offload in January, but sourcing a buyer might prove more difficult than they would have liked. His wages mean that many European clubs will be put off making a move, not to mention that the Magpies will likely be looking to recoup the fee they spent on him in 2015. Fans feel as though Benitez did not give him enough of a chance and considering the form shown by Joselu and Dwight Gayle this season, they may well have a point. However, all will be forgiven if the boss reinvests that fee on some talent that will fire the club to top flight survival but whether that materialises is another matter entirely.
