Italian champions Juventus have stepped up their pursuit of Liverpool midfielder Emre Can by asking Sami Khedira to speak to him about a potential move during the international break, according to a report.
The Daily Mirror claim that the Bianconeri have made the signing of Can a priority for next summer, with the young midfielder’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.
Juventus’ attempts to sign Can on a free transfer have now stepped up after they asked Khedira to sound Can out about a move to Turin as the two players meet up for Germany’s international friendlies against England and France.
Liverpool have so far failed to get Can to sign a new contract after rejecting approaches from Juventus for the midfielder last summer.
The report suggests that Jurgen Klopp would rather keep Can at Anfield for the season rather than lose him in January.
Can is reportedly open to staying at Anfield, but will only sign a new deal if the club agree to insert a buy-out clause in the contract, something which Liverpool have so far refused to do.
Football Insider verdict:
Juventus have coveted Can since the summer and it seems they are still keen on bringing in the young German international. Liverpool’s refusal to cash in on Can may however come back to bite them if they fail to get him to sign a new contract before the end of the season. The issue of a buy-out clause seems to be the main sticking point, and it is unknown why the club are refusing to comply with such a request. Can has developed well under Jurgen Klopp and has become a key figure in their midfield. To lose him now when he is blossoming into a fine young talent would be criminal if the only point of contention is the contract details. Whether Juventus’ latest move to charm Can into a move to Turin will work is yet to be seen, but the lure of a move to the Italian champions may be hard to resist.
