Pundit backs Everton to make free-agent swoop for 'unplayable' Mata

Juan Mata would be a “massive” signing for Everton as he approaches the end of his Man United contract.

That is according to ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 33-year-old attacking-midfielder.

The 41-cap Spain international’s Old Trafford deal expires at the end of June and the player is yet to reveal his plans for next season.

Kenny has previously told this site that he believes a playmaker should be Everton’s number one priority going into the summer window.

And asked whether the Toffees should consider chasing soon-to-be free agent Mata, he insisted the move would be good for both parties.

“I don’t see why he wouldn’t want to go to Everton,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“He’s still a good player and if it’s a chance for him to go there and play week in, week out then Everton should go for it.

“I’m sure he could be a massive boost to that club if they could sign someone of his calibre. That would be a formidable front four, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, Rodriguez and Mata.

“If you keep them four fit and firing then what a frontline that is. He is unplayable at times. He was so good when he was at Chelsea.

Mata has barely featured in the league for United across 2020-21 but did score in the 2-1 final-day victory over Wolves.

He has featured 273 times in all competitions since signing in January 2014.
