Everton have had a bid in excess of £6million accepted for Newcastle United youngster Lewis Gibson, according to a report.

The Liverpool Echo claim on their website that the Toffees have swooped in with a seven-figure offer and are set to beat off competition from Premier League rivals, including Tottenham, to secure the 17-year-old’s signature.

However, it is claimed that a transfer to Goodison Park is not a certainty, with the talented youngster likely to have a number of offers on the table this summer.

Gibson is an England Under-17 international, and already has 16 caps for his country, while he has broken into the Magpies’ Under-23 squad despite his young age, although his two appearances both came in the 2015/16 campaign.

He made 12 appearances for Newcastle’s Under-18 side last season, scoring once, and it has obviously been enough to make other clubs sit up and take notice.

He is also set to be out of contract next summer, and if the Magpies are unable to tie him down to a new deal, then they would no doubt be happy securing £6million for the youngster.

While it can be difficult to judge the ability of a player at such a young age, the fact he is so highly rated by both club and country speaks volumes. His 16 caps at youth level are no mean feat, and a potential seven-figure price tag indicates how desperate Everton are to capture his signature. However, Newcastle might be best off trying to convince him to remain on Tyneside, if he is as good as everyone believes he is. They have not had a top talent break into the first team for several years, and fans are likely to be concerned if they are seen to be flogging their future stars to Premier League rivals. They have made that mistake before, with the likes of Fraser Forster departing St James’ Park for a nominal fee before becoming an England international, and the Toon Army would not forgive the board if it happened again.
