Everton have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud as Borussia Dortmund have entered the race to sign him, according to a report.
The Mirror claims that the European giants are “ready to make a move” for the French international as they look to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as he could be on his way to Chelsea.
It is understood that West Ham, Marseille and AC Milan are also interested in the 30-year-old Premier League forward, who is said to be worried that Alexandre Lacazette’s arrival at the Emirates could cost him a place in Arsene Wenger’s first team plans.
Giroud signed for Arsenal from Montpellier in 2012 after helping them to win a shock Ligue 1 title, but he has admitted that a transfer could be on the horizon.
“I’m here in pre-season, I wanted to travel. Some people asked me if I am going to travel or not. I am an Arsenal player and for the moment I am here. I just want to prepare well for the season and we will see later,” he said, as quoted by the Mirror.
“But it is true that I really enjoyed my five years with Arsenal. I try to be professional. No matter what happens, I did my job on the pitch.
“I had an amazing welcome from the fans and from the club and it has been five amazing years for me.
“I won’t forget it, no matter what happens. We will see about my future.”
Giroud, who has won three FA Cups in his time with the Gunners, made 40 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring 16 goals and supplying seven assists.

This is certainly a blow for the Toffees in their bid to replace Romelu Lukaku, who has recently secured a big-money move to Manchester United. It will be hard for Ronald Koeman to replace the goals that the Belgian has provided to his team in the last few seasons, and Giroud would have been a great replacement due to his record in the Premier League. Sandro Ramirez looks to be the only traditional striker worthy of a first team spot at Goodison Park next season, so another striker has to be brought in before the end of the summer transfer window.
In other Everton news, the Toffees are set to complete another defender signing within the next few days.
