Everton tipped to sell Gbamin in January after 'unacceptable' update - pundit

Everton may look to sell Jean-Philippe Gbamin in January to make room on the wage bill for new arrivals.

That is the view of former Sunderland and England striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 26-year-old after he was punished for drink driving.

As reported by The Sun (28th September), Gbamin was fined £25,000 and banned from driving for 14-months after colliding with a car under the influence of alcohol.

The centre-midfielder has struggled since arriving to Goodison Park from Mainz in a £25million deal in August 2019.

Injuries have restricted the Ivory Coast international to just four appearances across all competitions for the Blues.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Gbamin’s time at Everton, Phillips said: “Only the individual can answer for what he’s done.

“But, as a footballer you are in the football and you are setting an example so you cannot condone it [drink driving]. It’s not acceptable. He will take his punishment.

“From a football point of view, he has had injuries, he has not been playing and then this. Come January they may look to move him on.

“Like Rodriguez, they might try to get him off the payroll and use the money to strengthen somewhere else.

“I imagine it’s been difficult for him since moving to Everton and this incident has just topped it off. It is not good to see.”

In other news, a pundit has cited Conor Gallagher move as Everton transfer is ‘on the cards’ pre-January.
