Everton could sign "an upgrade" on the likes of Michael Keane and Mason Holgate in Burnley defender James Tarkowski, according to Paul Robinson.

The ex-Clarets and England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, delivered a glowing reference of his former teammate Tarkowski.

The 29-year-old has less than two months remaining on his contract at Turf Moor and is set to become a free agent this summer.

Everton

An Everton source told Football Insider (30 April) that the Toffees are interested in signing Tarkowski if they avoid relegation.

It is understood that recently-appointed director of football Kevin Thelwell is a big admirer of the Burnley centre-half.

When asked by Football Insider's Dylan Childs for his insight on Tarkowski, Robinson said: "Tarky is a top player.

"Everton will be in the race to sign him.

"I played with him at Burnley and he is a great professional. He has the right mentality on and off the field. He is a very good player.

"Is he a top-level centre-half? Probably not. But he will certain push on from Burnley into a side in the top half of the league. He is strong, good in the air and a lot better with his feet than people give him credit for.

"Looking at Everton's current options he would be an improvement on what they've got. His leadership qualities would also help them in the dressing room.
