Everton tipped to sign 'world-class' defender in January after what Phillips has seen

Everton will look to sign a centre-half in January amid their ongoing defensive struggles.

That is the view of 2000 European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Toffees 2-1 loss at Wolves.

Rafael Benitez’s side have kept just two clean sheets in 12 fixtures this season, with seven goals conceded in their last two games.

As revealed by Football Insider (16th September), Benitez wants to sign a “world-class” centre-half in the January window.

Availability and lack of funds prevented the club from addressing the problem in the summer window.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if the centre-back area is an alarming issue, Phillips said:

“It’s a position Everton need to look at if they really want to push on, that’s for sure. They want to be finishing in the Europa League spots come the end of the season. It’s an area they need to address in January if they want to realise that.

“The will be looking for a leader. Someone with experience who can organise back there.

“Their current centre-halves are good players but they have leaked far too many goals of late. A presence in that back four would make a huge difference.

“They have the offensive players to damage teams. They just need that solid base behind them. It’s a position I expect Benitez to address in January if not the summer.’
