Sam Allardyce’s desire to be reunited with Christian Benteke at Everton in January has been dealt a massive blow as the striker doesn’t want to move, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim in their live transfer blog on Monday (16:27) that Benteke wishes to stay at Crystal Palace as he doesn’t want to move out of London with the World Cup in the summer.
The Daily Mirror had previously revealed that Allardyce was plotting a swoop for the striker in January, as he saw him as an ideal replacement for Romelu Lukaku.
Benteke scored seven goals under Allardyce at Crystal Palace last season, but has only managed to score one league goal so far this season.
Football Insider Verdict
Benteke has struggled this season with him only scoring his first league goal on Saturday against Leicester City. It’s understandable that the star wouldn’t want to risk his World Cup place by making a move that might not work out. The striker faces tough competition to make Belgium’s World Cup squad as he has to battle Romelu Lukaku, Divorck Origi, Dries Mertens, Laurent Depoitre and Michy Batshuayi for a place. However, Sam Allardyce shouldn’t be too disappointed because Crystal Palace would have been reluctant to sell even if Benteke wanted to leave. Crystal Palace are in a relegation battle so therefore would have required a huge bid in order to let a key player go.
