Everton have confirmed that they have completed the signing of Wayne Rooney from Manchester – and understandably, fans on Twitter were delighted.

The Toffees announced on their official Twitter account and official website on Sunday that the 31-year-old had penned a two-year deal as he re-signs for his boyhood club.

Rooney left Merseyside to join Manchester United in 2004 and became an Old Trafford legend as he lifted five Premier League titles and won the Champions League.

He scored 15 goals in 71 appearances across all competitions for Everton prior to his move to United, and will no doubt be looking to add to that tally during his second spell with the club.

Rooney is the latest recruit to what has been a huge overhaul of the Toffees squad by manager Ronald Koeman, and fans on social media appear to think that this deal is the best of the lot – with one saying that he is “drunk in love” with the signing.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Rooney will always be regarded as a legend at Manchester United, but his performances in recent years have taken a serious turn for the worst.

The 119-times England international scored just eight goals in 39 appearances across all competitions last season for Jose Mourninho’s side, but his overall record at the Red Devils of 253 goals in 559 matches is a record that he will always be proud of.
